POSITION OVERVIEW
As an Associate, you will join one of BDC Capital’s investment teams as an early‑career specialist in investment finance. BDC is the only bank dedicated exclusively to Canadian entrepreneurs, and your work contributes directly to the growth and success of small and medium‑sized businesses across Canada.
In this role, you will lead defined components of investment evaluation, portfolio management, and exit planning, while contributing rigorous financial and market analysis to active transactions. CHALLENGES TO BE MET
Platform Building
- Support management of the transaction pipeline, including quarterly and bi‑annual reporting and financial analysis.
- Assist team members in the ongoing management of active investments.
- Maintain investment research files, business plans, and supporting documentation in accordance with BDC policies and procedures.
- Ensure investment files are complete and accurate, including documentation related to monitoring, amendments, and disbursements.
- Perform financial analysis, forecasting, and tracking for portfolio investments.
Portfolio Management, Support & Exit Planning
- Monitor the current portfolio to identify companies likely to require capital and communicate insights to the team.
- Track portfolio performance versus financial models and forecasts; escalate risks and opportunities to senior stakeholders.
- Participate, on occasion, in investee board meetings as an observer and summarize key developments for Partners.
- Support investee companies through introductions to suppliers, investors, and potential employees.
- Assist deal teams in the development and execution of exit strategies.
Deal Making
- Review business plans and support communications with entrepreneurs and investment partners.
- Prepare interview memoranda and recommendations related to follow‑on investments.
- Lead defined due‑diligence workstreams covering market dynamics, competitive landscape, management teams, sales, products, capitalization tables, and exit potential.
- Define and validate performance metrics; build valuation models, financial forecasts, and pro forma analyses.
- Draft Investment Memos, with a primary focus on Financial and Market sections.
- Support Partners during investment committee presentations.
- Review technical documentation and collaborate with external technical consultants as required.
- Conduct reference checks with competitors, clients, industry experts, and current or former employees of target companies.
- Build and maintain sector knowledge, industry research, and market intelligence across relevant domains.
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
Required Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Commerce, Economics, Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM), or a related field.
- Other degrees considered if supported by strong analytical and financial skills.
- Strong financial acumen required.
Professional Experience
- 3–5 years of experience in roles requiring structured thinking, financial analysis, and analytical problem solving, such as:
- Venture capital, private equity, investment banking, or accounting
- Corporate strategy, corporate development, consulting, or advisory roles
- Operator roles within technology startups or industry‑leading organizations
Technical and Analytical Skills
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including:
- Financial modelling
- Sensitivity analysis
- Scenario modelling
- Forecasting and data analysis
- Ability to develop valuation models and financial pro formas.
- Strong structured problem‑solving and analytical reasoning skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word and PowerPoint for executive‑level materials.
- Ability to write clear, concise, and well‑structured Investment Memos.
- Ability to present and intervene effectively in executive or investment committee settings.

- Ability to work independently while contributing effectively within a team environment.
- Collaborative mindset and ability to build constructive relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
- Proactive approach to identifying gaps and supporting team priorities.

Preferred Qualifications
- Post‑graduate education or professional certification, completed or in progress, such as:
- Master of Business Administration (MBA)
- Master’s degree or PhD in Finance or related discipline
- Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation
- Experience with additional analytical tools beyond Excel (e.g., financial databases, data analysis software).
- Technical skills with broad applicability (e.g., coding, chemistry, electronics).
- Operational experience or domain expertise in a technical or industrial sector.
- Bilingualism in French and English.
